Interaction Research Institute, Inc.

Cross-Cultural Interaction IRI's unique approach to cross-cultural intervention focuses on three levels of understanding: self-awareness, the nature of mankind, and inter-cultural similarities and differences. Once insight is gained, the individual can begin to understand others. The nature of mankind, the premises and assumptions about human nature, provides a foundation for understanding universal human behavior. It is within this framework that we can grasp the meaning of cross-cultural interaction, and know how to deal differences among people.

IRI's training does not concentrate solely on differences that exist between cultures. Rather, participants learn what they bring to a situation in terms of their own needs and strivings, and why they may interpret any situation from a personal frame of reference. The wisdom gained from this approach allows participants to become multi-cultural, communicate with others with tolerance, and develop a true sense of cultural relativism.

IRI developed the Intercultural Transaction Technique (ITT), a method of selecting and training personnel for a cross-cultural environment. The ITT allows trainees to examine the underlying causes of intercultural conflict on a very personal level. An individual's profile is projected onto the profile of a target culture. Candidates not only become aware of potential conflicts, but they also develop adaptive mechanisms prior to contact. This precontact adaptation model is augmented with a Self-reference Guide for use after involvement while immersed with another culture. This approach allows graduates to respond effectively during social exchange or critical transactions.

Training is tailored to the unique requirements of the organization.
