IRI's Journey to Excellenceä is the most advanced approach to total corporate transformation ever devised. Combining the principles and methods of Senge and Deming, this modular improvement strategy is designed to produce beneficial change throughout an organization through systematic evolution over a period of time…the journey. The organization transforms toward peak efficiency as members traverse the learning objectives to reach each port of call along the way.

Ports of Call 

The Journey to Excellence includes five ports of call to reach transformation.
Communication
Port One. Communication.  Concentration is placed on spreading the word that all members of a complex organization are interdependent. All are customers and suppliers, equally responsible for their own function and for the effect of an action on each phase of the system. Activities and exercises evoke systems thinking throughout the organization.
Leadership Port Two. Leadership.  Leadership and management skill development is the focus of this course. Managers and emerging leaders are provided the tools to enhance their skill and motivate employees through the "white water" of change as the organization evolves toward a multi-functional environment. All members are involved in Leadership exercises and activities.
Insight Port Three. Insight.  During this trip members concentrate on developing behavioral models of performance excellence. This series builds upon the skills previously developed. The Journey progresses from information gathering on processes and customer expectations to practicing techniques that improve performance. Members more toward operationally defined objectives.
Achievement Port Four. Achievement.  Exercises and activities during achievement continue to progress toward performance objectives. Expectations are clearly defined and assessed. Achievement is monitored by both employees and managers. Managers become fully responsible for focused meetings that assure personnel are on track and progressing well.

Motivation

Port Five. Motivation.  The final port in the Journey is devoted to sustaining the momentum through recognition of successes and implementation of improvements generated through the lessons-learned activity. Managers and employees become adept at identifying behavior that has a positive impact on the organization. All become part of a Learning Organization. Principles, policies, and structure of the Journey are consolidated and institutionalized during this stop.

All members sign-up for the Journey and receive a Boarding Pass. Each passenger receives a Ships Log Workbook to record and verify progress throughout the Journey. At the completion of the Journey a Certificate of Excellence is awarded to all who reach the final destination of Transformation.
